Tony Llansó, patriota cubano, ¡Presente!

Statement of the National Committee to Free the Cuban Five
With deep sorrow we say good bye to our dear friend Tony Llansó, who dedicated his life to the cause of Cuba's Revolution and the Cuban Five Heroes, and who passed away on Dec. 6th after a long bout with cancer. Tony was a pillar in the progressive Cuban community of Miami, a community that courageously struggles for the right of their Cuban homeland to self-determination and freedom from U.S. hostility. Words cannot convey the personal loss that we feel, and the void he leaves in the Cuba solidarity movement, especially with the Antonio Maceo Brigade and all the member organizations of the Alianza Martiana, and his comradeship with other sister organizations that defend Cuba. There are not many photos of Tony in the Cuba solidarity activities because he was always behind the scenes, taking care of security, transportation and other details. When he took on the task of producing the beautiful small silver "5" pin that was created by Cuban Five hero Gerardo Hernández, he was not satisfied until the star was made with a beautiful gold color. He wanted it true to Gerardo's design. He made everyone who visited Miami welcome, and often was the one to pick you up at the airport, and take you back. It was a real treat to be in his company and enjoy his friendship and humor. Like so many of the compañeros and compañeras of the member organizations of the Alianza, who live and struggle in Miami under extremely difficult conditions, he had an indominable courage for his people that was steeled in the belief that "to die for the homeland is to live." He was willing to take those risks for Cuba, and with a sense of humor, too. Tony was a warm and caring man who loved his family so much, his wife Emilia and his three daughters. To them we extend our heartfelt condolences. Whether it was helping out with the very first Pastors for Peace caravans, fighting for Elian's return home, or the ongoing struggle for the Cuban Five's freedom, Tony was always there to make it happen. He often accompanied the family of René González on their family visits with René in Marianna prison, he protested in Miami, he marched in Washington, DC to demand the Five's freedom, he did whatever was needed for Cuba's Revolution. Together with all the member organizations of La Alianza Martiana, we in the National Committee to Free the Cuban Five will miss Tony's friendship and warmth dearly. Queridos compañeros y compañeras, Tengo el doloroso deber de informarles que anoche en La Habana falleció nuestro valioso compañero, Toni Llansó. Toni, por largos años y hasta su muerte, fue miembro de nuestra Brigada y durante los últimos dos años presidió la organización Alianza Martiana. Por más de nueve años Toni estuvo resistiendo los embates del cáncer, mientras que lejos de dejar de cumplir todas sus responsabilidades asumía cada vez más de ellas, quizás, consciente de las inexorables consecuencias de su enfermedad, como manera de compensar todas aquellas que no podría cumplir, en contra de su voluntad, en el futuro. Los insto a asistir, ahora más que ayer, al Acto que exige al inmediata libertad de los Cinco, convocado por las organizaciones que integran la Alianza Martiana, este domingo, 12 de diciembre, a las 2:30 p.m. en su Salón Key Biscayne, en el Hotel Embassy Suite, el de siempre. La noticia ha sido profundamente dolorosa, se nos fue uno de los mejores seres humanos, sensible y siempre dispuesto a lo que fuere por el bien de su pueblo, de su patria, de sus hermanos que estabamos junto a él, aun cuando algunos no tuvimos la dicha enorme de abrazarle personalmente. Hay abrazos mas fuertes que nos unen: la misma causa que defendemos, el mismo amor por nuestra Cuba libre, el mismo orgullo de cubanos, así te queremos, querido Tony Llansó, y así estarás por siempre en nuestros corazones y nuestra obra de cada día. Hoy la patria orgullosa recoge en su seno eterno a uno de sus más nobles hijos, al insustituible hermano de mil batallas, al compañero fiel de todos los cubanos dignos. Eres semilla de dignidad y tu ejemplo sera el camino para todos los que aprendimos a quererte, y a honrarte. En este momento dificil, todo el amor y sentir de los Cinco está con sus familiares y amigos. ¡Tony vive por siempre en nuestras almas! Cinco abrazos infinitos;
