Summer 2010 internships with the
National Committee to Free the Cuban Five

Learn valuable organizing skills interning with the National Committee to Free the Cuban Five this summer. Fulfill independent study or community service requirements while becoming part of the movement for social justice in our communities and internationally. Help build the movement to free the Cuban Five, five Cuban men who are in U.S. prison, serving one double-life sentence and 91 years collectively, after being wrongly convicted in U.S. federal court in Miami, on June 8, 2001.

Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González and René González were falsely accused by the U.S. government of committing espionage conspiracy against the United States, and other related charges.

But the Five pointed out vigorously in their defense that they were involved in monitoring the actions of Miami-based terrorist groups, in order to prevent terrorist attacks on their country of Cuba.

The Five’s actions were never directed at the U.S. government. They never harmed anyone nor ever possessed nor used any weapons while in the United States.

The National Committee to Free the Cuban Five understands that once the public majority is aware of the injustice of the case of the five, they will pressure the US government to free The Five.  To build and sustain national pressure for the freedom of The Five, the National Committee uses numerous tactics.

Alongside building demonstrations, you will have the opportunity to gain experience through organizing various actions, such as:

  • Educational Public Forums
  • Film Showings
  • Press Conferences
  • Coalition Organizing
  • Internet Organizing
  • Regional organizing/Speaking Tours (public speaking)
  • Media Advocacy, Video Production and Documentary Digital Photography
  • Website Administration
  • Research
  • Office Management

Qualifications: Passion to work with others to build the social justice movement. No experience required. Experience in multi-cultural and diverse gender environments helpful. Bilingual language skills helpful. General knowledge of computers and community organizing experience helpful.

Eight to 40 hours a week for a 4- to 6-week minimum encouraged. The National Committee to Free the Cuban Five is a volunteer-based organization. This internship is unpaid.
It is primarily based in the San Francisco Bay Area, but we do have national branches that might be available. Housing can be negotiated for those coming outside the Bay Area.

The Cuban Five are political prisoners, and their freedom will depend not only on the arduous work of the defense team but just as importantly on the public support that can be organized. Over 250 committees have been established around the world, demanding immediate freedom for Gerardo, Ramón, Antonio, Fernando and René.

In the United States, the National Committee to Free the Cuban Five is working very hard to build broad support for these anti-terrorist heroes, with forums and video showings, media and publicity work, and a march that was held on Sept. 23, 2006 in front of the White House.

The involvement of young organizers has been critical as well, with speaking tours, film showings and educational forums organized on campuses throughout the Bay Area, and California.

This year is critical for the struggle to win freedom the Cuban Five. Call or write us! Become an intern and find out how you can do your part to win justice for five men who dedicated their lives to save others.
