Holguin, Cuba — It was a long road to freedom for Cuban Five hero René González, who suffered 13 years in U.S. prison and almost two years of forced probation in the United States, for the “crime” of protecting his people of Cuba from U.S.-sponsored terrorism.

Yet, he retains that exceptional spirit and optimism that was never dampened while imprisoned.

That was evident to the 278 activists from 51 countries who heard him speak today at the ninth “International Colloquium for the Cuban Five” here in the eastern Cuban city of Holguin. Everywhere he has appeared in the panels, cultural performances and the streets of Holguin, González receives standing ovations and enthusiastic crowds of Cubans and conference delegates.

González recalled his time in prison to urge all to fight the injustice of his four brothers’ imprisonment.

“I was 13 years in prison. I believe that one uses certain mechanisms to confront that situation, mechanisms to grow with, even in the worst circumstances — as I have always said — to leave prison better than when I entered. And one mechanism that I always used was not to count the time.

“That is what is happening to my four brothers. They are strong men, with a high morale that has been tested time and again. They will always rise above their accusers, all those corrupt judges. They persevere in a way that their accusers can never understand.

“But they don’t deserve to be in prison counting time, and we need to get them out.”

Other family members of the Five — mothers, daughters, sisters and nieces — gave moving testimony of their lives without Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González and René González. They gave heartfelt thanks to colloquium delegates for their years of solidarity with the Five. Of special concern for all of Cuba and the Five’s supporters worldwide is the double-life sentence of Gerardo Hernández, who was falsely framed for Cuba’s Feb. 24, 1996 self-defense shoot-down of Brothers to the Rescue planes (BTTR).

The week of activities has included delegates’ discussions on solidarity actions to pressure the U.S. government to free the Five, talks by relatives of Cubans who died in U.S.-backed terrorist attacks. Rounding out the itinerary were a Cuban Five solidarity marathon and cycling race, visits to Holguin universities and surrounding municipalities and cultural performances by Holguin school-age children.

The highlight of the week’s events was a mass march for the Five by the people of Holguin and delegates, capped by a memorable presentation of Cuba’s “Order of Solidarity” to ex-U.S. attorney general Ramsey Clark, granted by the Council of State and signed by Cuban President Raúl Castro.

With thousands of Holguin citizens present, ICAP president Kenia Serrano pinned the medal on Clark’s shirt. Then he spoke, expressing gratitude to Cuba for its revolution.

During the week, some of the proposed actions include university and Law school forums in Washington DC and other regions by the U.S.-based National Committee to Free the Cuban Five. Already the National Committee has organized successful university events in Washington DC, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, in the past 12 months, reaching hundreds of students and professors who had no previous knowledge of the anti-terrorist mission of the Cuban Five.

Other events include Five Days for the Five in Washington DC, June 4-11, 2014 called by the International Committee for the Freedom of the Cuban Five, and in London March 7-8, 2014, an International Commission of Inquiry into the Case of the Cuban Five, initiated by the London-based Cuba Solidarity Campaign.

Next year, the third International Conference in Solidarity with Cuba will take place in Havana in October, to bring together thousands of people from around the world. If the Cuban Five are not all home in Cuba by then, they will of course be a major focus of that major event, sponsored by the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples, ICAP.

Fue un largo camino hacia la libertad para el Héroe René González, quien sufrió 13 años en las prisiones de Estados Unidos, y casi dos años de forzada libertad condicional en EEUU, por el simple "crimen" de haber protegido a su pueblo cubano del terrorismo respaldado por los EEUU.

Y sin embargo, él ha mantenido ese espíritu excepcional y ese optimismo que le ayudó tanto durante su encarcelamiento.

Eso era evidente para los 278 activistas de 51 países, quienes escucharon su mensaje hoy en el noveno "Coloquio Internacional por los Cinco" aquí en la ciudad oriental de Holguín. Dondequiera que él ha aparecido, en los paneles, las galas culturales y en las calles de Holguín, González ha recibido ovaciones.

“Yo estuve 13 años en la cárcel. En realidad, yo creo que uno tiene algunos mecanismos para enfrentar esa situación obviamente. Mecanismos para crecer en las peores circunstancias, mecanismos para, como siempre dije, salir mejor de como entré. Y un mecanismo que siempre usé, fue no contar el tiempo”.

“Eso está sucediendo hoy mismo a mis cuatro hermanos. Ellos son hombres fuertes, son hombres de una moral a toda prueba, son hombres que siempre van a estar por encima de sus cristales, de sus acusadores, de todos esos jueces corruptos, son hombres que van a resistir a una altura que ninguno de ellos jamás van a entender.

“Pero ellos no merecen estar contando los días que les faltan. Es injusto que están en la prisión, y tenemos que sacarlos”.

Los familiares de los Cinco

Otros familiares de los Cinco — esposas, madres, hijas, hermanas y sobrinas—dieron testimonio conmovido de sus vidas sin Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González y René González. Expresaron su agradecimiento a los

delegados del coloquio por sus años de solidaridad con los Cinco. De especial preocupación para todo el mundo es la sentencia de doble cadena perpetua de Gerardo, falsamente condenado por el derribo — acto de Cuba en auto-defensa — de los aviones de Hermanos al Rescate, el 24 de febrero, 1996.

La semana de actividades ha incluido discusiones de qué tipo de acciones se puede realizar para presionar al gobierno EEUU para liberar a los Cinco, y presentaciones por dos familiares — Margarita Morales y Jorge de la Nuez — de las víctimas que fallecieron en la voladora del avión cubano por el terrorista Luis Posada Carriles, en 1976. El itinerario de la semana incluye un maratón, una carrera de bicicletas, visitas a las universidades de Holguín, a los municipios, y galas culturales, por niños y jóvenes.

Una marcha masiva de más de 10.000 holguineros y los delegados culminó en una presentación de La Orden de la Solidaridad a Ramsey Clark, luchador antiguerra y antiimperialista. La medalla fue otorgada por el Consejo de Estado y firmado por el Presidente Raúl Castro. Con miles de ciudadanos cubanos presentes, la presidenta del Instituto Cubano por la Amistad de los Pueblos (ICAP), Kenia Serrano, le puso la medalla a Clark. Luego él habló de su agradecimiento a Cuba por su revolución, “el mejor del mundo”.

Eventos venideros

Durante la semana, algunos de las acciones propuestas incluyen: foros universitarios y de Facultades de Derecho en Washington, DC y en otras regiones, llamado por el Comité Nacional para la Libertad de los Cinco. Ya el comité ha organizado eventos universitarios exitosos en Washington DC, Carolina del Norte, Pennsylvania y en Texas en los últimos 12 meses, llegando a cientos de estudiantes y profesores que nunca habían tenido conocimiento de la misión antiterrorista de los Cinco.

Otros eventos incluyen el tercer Cinco Días por los Cinco, del 4 al 11 de junio, 2014, llamado por el Comité International para la Liberación de los Cinco, y en Londres, 7 a 8 de marzo, una Comisión Internacional de Investigaciones al Caso de los Cinco, iniciado por la Campaña de Solidaridad con Cuba, basada en Londres.

Y en octubre, 2014, la tercera Conferencia Internacional en Solidaridad con Cuba se realizará en La Habana, para traer miles de personas de todo el mundo. Si todos los Cinco no están en casa en octubre, serán un enfoque central de esa importante conferencia, auspiciada por el ICAP.
