However, at the risk of being repetitive, for reasons of basic decency I cannot help but write about this reprehensible deed. The keys of the City of Hialeah were given to Posada Carriles two days ago, on Tuesday, June 14, which is celebrated in the United States as Flag Day. I just returned from Cuba. On that day, June 14, decent Cuban men and women, besides commemorating the birth date of Ernesto Guevara, also commemorate the birth date of Mayor General Antonio Maceo. There is no better example than this to demonstrate the profound difference between the values that sustain the Cuban nation and those that sustain the ultra-right Cuban American sector in the United States, principally those in southern Florida. Here in southern Florida, there is no Cuban — whether those of us who have been in this country for 50 years or those recently arrived from Cuba — who is fooled about who Luis Posada Carriles is or the numerous odious crimes he is guilty of. I am convinced that those ladies and gentlemen who make up the council of the City of Hialeah and brand new mayor of that city, ignore the fact that that day commemorates the birth of Mayor General Antonio Maceo, whose life is an example to all Cuban patriots. Luis Posada Carriles was and is the complete opposite. Posada Carriles comes from the same stock as Arsenio Ortiz and Esteban Ventura, murderous henchmen of the dictators Gerardo Machado and Fulgencio Batista respectively, who despicably bloodied the very lives of the Cuban people. For more than 50 years, the ultraright Cuban American sector has been responsible for causing the greatest possible harm to the Cuban people’s right to live and develop in peace. More than 3,478 Cubans murdered and more than 2,100 physically disabled are the result of terrorist campaigns against the people, perpetrated by terrorists like Luis Posada Carriles. Because of course we are fully aware that he is not the only terrorist responsible for so many crimes. So, why be surprised that the mayor and the city council of the City of Hialeah has awarded the keys of that city to that monster for — in their words — his “unbreakable dedication for the advancement of democracy and freedom of Cuba. Why be surprised by that dishonorable deed, if we know that those politicians of Hialeah think the same as Luis Posada Carriles and his terrorist accomplices about what has to be done to Cuba? The granting of the keys of that city to Posada is consistent with the lack of ethics of people like them, and consistent with what they and their ilk feel for the Cuban nation. Indeed, deeds like this demonstrate to the world, who these people really are. |
