Our Duty to the Five

MIAMI—It was five years ago on December 12 that the Southern Florida Federal District Court condemned our brother, Gerardo Hernández, to two life sentences plus 15 years in prison. For the next 15 days the same court also unjustly condemned our remaining four brothers to prison: Ramón Labañino (a life sentence plus 18 years); René González (15 years); Fernando González (19 years); and Antonio Guerrero (a life sentence plus 10 years). All were falsely charged by the federal government of conspiracy to commit espionage against the United States and other related crimes.

The federal government lied and it is still lying. The Five, as everyone knows, were not in Miami to spy against the government of the United States, but to infiltrate the terrorist organizations of the Cuban-American extreme rightwing, which with the full knowledge and protection of the federal government, plans and directs from that city terrorist actions against the Cuban people and against others of this country who oppose them.

The Five had to infiltrate those terrorist organizations which for more than four decades have operated from Miami, causing death and desolation in Cuba because the federal authorities fail to carry out their duty that the law requires. Indeed, with their full knowledge, they allow these terrorists to freely develop and carry out their perfidious activities.

As the Five themselves expressed in June of 2001, in a “Message to the People of the United States,” after being convicted of those false charges, “Why are the U.S. authorities tolerant with these terrorists who act against our country? Why don’t they investigate or take action against the terrorist plans denounced by Cuba …  Why is it that the professed authors of these and other terrorist actions are still loose in South Florida as was clearly established during the trial? Who trained them and who is allowing them to carry out their plans?”

The federal government has kept the Five imprisoned for eight years and three months. For eight years and three months the government has continuously lied and obstructed justice to viciously punish five courage and honorable men whose duty was to prevent terrorist acts from being carried out from U.S. soil.

For more than five years, also in Miami, the members of the organizations that make up the Martí Alliance (Alianza Martiana): the Association of Workers of the Cuban Community (ATC) the Antonio Maceo Brigade (BAM), the Alianza Martiana, the José Martí Association, and the Bolivarian Circle of Miami, have denounced the crime being committed against the Five. We have denounced the terrorist of the Cuban American extreme rightwing for the infamous crimes that they have perpetuated for so many years. For all these years we have also demanded that the federal authorities do justice by freeing the Cuban Five and jailing the terrorists.

Since September 2001, less than two weeks after the terrorist acts of September 11 that caused so many deaths, we began our campaign in a conference at a hotel in our city. We denounced those who have caused so many deaths in Cuba through terrorism, and we demanded freedom for the Five.

From that day forward we have not let up, through public campaigns, demonstrations and conferences. The members of the organizations that make up the Alianza Martiana raised more than $11,000 in 2004 for the $50,000 fund that was needed for the publication of a full-page ad in the New York Times that protested the Five’s situation. Then, in 2006, we raised more than $36,000 of the $110,000 that has been raised so far, for an international fund of $250,000 that is needed to sustain the public campaign on their behalf.

And we have done this because it is our duty with the Five. It is the least that we can do for these five brothers who have shown, with the greatest dignity, their willingness to sacrifice everything to defend the lives of all our loved ones in Cuba and here. And we will not stop until justice is won by their freedom.

“We have always been moved by a strong sentiment of human solidarity, love for our homeland and contempt for that which goes against the dignity of the human being,” expressed Gerardo, Ramón, Antonio, Fernando and René in the aforementioned message. They continue, “We declare ourselves completely innocent. Our loved ones understand the depth of the ideas that guide us and they will take pride in our sacrifices for Humanity in this struggle against terrorism and for the independence of Cuba.”

Nuestro deber con los Cinco

MIAMI—El 12 de diciembre hizo cinco años desde que el Tribunal Federal de Distrito del Sur de la Florida condenara a nuestro hermano, Gerardo Hernández, a dos cadenas perpetuas más 15 años de prisión. Durante los quince días que siguieron el mismo tribunal también injustamente condenó a prisión a nuestros restantes cuatro hermanos: Ramón Labañino (una cadena perpetua más 18 años); René González (15 años); Fernando González (19 años); y Antonio Guerrero (una cadena perpetua más 10 años). Todos habiendo sido falsamente acusados por el gobierno federal de cometer conspiración para cometer espionaje en contra de los Estados Unidos y otros delitos que se desprenden de éste.

Mintió y miente el gobierno federal. Los Cinco, como todos sabemos, no estaban en Miami para espiar en contra del gobierno de los Estados Unidos, sino para infiltrarse en las organizaciones terroristas de la extrema derecha cubano americana, que con el conocimiento y protección del gobierno federal, planifican y dirigen desde esta ciudad acciones terroristas en contra del pueblo cubano y en contra de otros que en este país se oponen a ellos.

Los Cinco tuvieron que infiltrarse en esas organizaciones terroristas que desde hace más de cuatro décadas operan desde Miami causando muerte y desolación en Cuba porque las autoridades federales no cumplen con los deberes que la ley les impone y, con pleno conocimiento, permiten que estos terroristas actúen y desarrollen libremente sus pérfidas actividades.

Como los Cinco mismos expresaran en junio del 2001, en un "Mensaje al Pueblo de Estados Unidos", al ser encontrados culpables de esas falsas acusaciones: "¿Por qué autoridades de Estados Unidos con su tolerancia permiten que se atente contra nuestro país; no investigan ni adoptan medidas contra los planes terroristas que Cuba ha denunciado [...] ¿Por qué los autores confesos de estos actos terroristas se pasean libremente por el sur de la Florida...? ¿Quiénes fueron sus entrenadores y quiénes permiten sus planes?"

Hace ocho años y tres meses que el gobierno federal mantiene a los Cinco encarcelados. Por ocho años y tres meses ese gobierno ha sostenidamente mentido y obstruido la justicia para viciosamente castigar a cinco hombres valientes y honorables cuya tarea era impedir que se cometieran actos de terrorismo desde territorio estadounidense.

Por más de cinco años, también aquí en Miami, los miembros de las organizaciones que componen la Alianza Martiana: la ATC, la Brigada Antonio Maceo, la Alianza Martiana, la Asociación José Martí y el Círculo Bolivariano de Miami hemos denunciado el crimen que contra los Cinco se comete; hemos acusado a los terroristas de la extrema derecha cubano americana por los infames crímenes que a través de tantos años han perpetrado; como también por todos estos años hemos exigido que las autoridades federales hagan justicia devolviéndole la libertad a los Cinco y encarcelando a los terroristas.

Desde septiembre del 2001, a menos de dos semanas después de los actos terroristas de aquel 11 de septiembre que tantas muertes causaron, comenzamos nuestra campaña en una conferencia en un hotel de nuestra ciudad, denunciando a aquellos que a través del terrorismo tantas muertes han causado en Cuba, y exigiendo la libertad de los Cinco.

Desde entonces a acá no hemos cejado de hacer lo mismo a través de campañas públicas, manifestaciones y conferencias. Los miembros de las organizaciones que componen la Alianza Martiana recaudaron en el 2004 más de $11 mil dólares para el fondo de $50 mil dólares necesario para la publicación de un anuncio a página completa en el The New York Times denunciado la situación de los Cinco y, después, en el transcurso del 2006, también han recaudado más de $36 mil dólares, de los $110 mil dólares hasta el presente recaudado, para un fondo internacional de $250 mil dólares necesario para sostener una campaña pública en su defensa.

Y lo hemos hecho por que es nuestro deber con los Cinco. Es lo menos que podemos hacer por estos cinco hermanos que han demostrado, con la máxima dignidad, estar dispuestos a sacrificarlo todo por defender la vida de todos nuestros seres queridos en Cuba y aquí. Y no desistiremos hasta lograr que se haga justicia obteniendo su libertad.

"Nos guió un fuerte sentimiento de solidaridad humana, amor a nuestra patria y desprecio por todo lo que no respete la dignidad humana", expresaron Gerardo, Ramón, Antonio, Fernando y René en ese Mensaje antes citado, y continuaron, "Nos declaramos totalmente inocentes. Nuestras familias comprenden el alcance de las ideas que nos han guiado y sentirán orgullo por esta entrega a la humanidad en la lucha contra el terrorismo y por la independencia de Cuba."
