Help raise the visibility of the Five!Nov. 7, 2006
Widgets are small programs which create a small (usually) free-floating window on your desktop, and accomplish some function. With Opera, a popular web browser, you can use widgets to access RSS feeds of websites such as this one. There is currently a contest going on for creating popular widgets (with a deadline of Nov. 15). A group of Cuban programmers and students, together with a Cuban journalism student, have come up with a way to use this contest to help raise the visibility of the Cuban Five. First, the student created five websites, one for each of our comrades: The programmers then created widgets, one for each site (a sixth one is underway, which will link to this site). The contest is judged by the number of people downloading these widgets (located by countries), and if everyone visiting this site were to do so, and spread the word, we have the potential to help the Cuban students win the contest, but, much more importantly, the opportunity to raise the visibility of the Five. As the journalism student writes:
The widgets can be downloaded from this site. If you have Opera, you should do so from Opera, rather than from any other browser. If you don't have Opera on your computer, you will need to download that as well from the same site (Opera is a very highly regarded browser, and is now free). Once the widget is on your computer, when you activate one (or more than one) you will see a small window that looks like this (using the Antonio widget as an example):
Clicking on the small "enlarge" icon to the right of the time enlarges the icon and shows this: The list on the bottom is a list of posts from the relevant blog; clicking on them will allow you to read that article. And, when new articles are posted, they automatically appear on the list. Download all five widgets! Help raise the visibility of the Five throughout the world! ¡Ayude a difundir la causa de los Cinco!7 Nov. 2006
Los widgets son aplicaciones web que lucen (por lo general) como una pequeña ventana flotante en su escritorio y que realizan una determinada función. Con Opera, un popular navegador, usted puede usar los widgets para acceder a RSS feeds de sitios web, como es el caso de este. Recientemente, se abrió un concurso (con fecha de cierre para el 15 de este mes) con el objetivo de crear widgets populares. Un grupo de estudiantes de programación, junto a una estudiante de periodismo, todos cubanos, se han sumado a la competencia con el objetivo de ayudar a difundir la imagen de los Cinco. Primeramente, la estudiante creó cinco blogs, uno para cada uno de nuestros camaradas: Luego, los programadores crearon los widgets, uno para cada blog (un sexto, que se enlazará a este mismo sitio, está en camino). Para este concurso, el jurado fallará según la mayor cantidad de descargas por widget (ubicados por países), por lo que si todos los que visitaran este sitio los descargaran y además difundieran la información, podríamos ayudar a que los estudiantes cubanos ganaran el concurso y lo que es mucho más importante, tendríamos la oportunidad de que un mayor número de personas conozca el caso de los Cinco, como dijera la propia estudiante de periodismo:
Los widgets pueden ser descargados desde este sitio. Si usted tiene Opera, debe descargarlos con ese navegador. De no tenerlo instalado, necesitará descargarlo desde el mismo sitio web (Opera es un navegador muy reconocido y ahora gratuito). Una vez que los Widgets estén en su computadora, al activar uno (o varios), usted verá una pequeña ventana que lucirá como ésta (utilizando el widget de Antonio como ejemplo):
Clickeando en el ícono de maximizar, a la derecha del reloj, éste se expandirá, viéndose así: La lista que aparece en la parte inferior, es una lista de titulares situados en el respectivo blog, clickear sobre ellos le remitirá a leer el artículo. Cada vez que se publiquen artículos nuevos, aparecerán automáticamente en la lista. ¡Descargue los cinco widgets! ¡Ayude a difundir la causa de los Cinco!
