Washington Opposes Hearing of Cuban Five Case by US Supreme Court by Alina Martínez HAVANA, Cuba, May 26 (acn) The president of the Cuban Parliament, Ricardo Alarcon, said on Monday that the US Government announced this weekend that it is against the hearing by the US Supreme Court of the case of five Cuban anti-terrorist fighters who remain unjustly imprisoned in the United States. Gerardo Hernndez, Ramn Labaino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez, and Rene Gonzalez - internationally known as the Cuban Five - were arrested in South Florida where they were monitoring anti-Cuba extremist groups that were planning and carrying out terrorist actions against the Caribbean nation. They were arrested in Miami in September 1998 and later convicted to very long and unjust sentences in a biased and political frame-up trial that was full of violations. Alarcon explained that the defense team of the Cuban Five now has 10 days to present their reply to the Supreme Court before the judges of this judicial body meet to decide whether they accept the case or not. The Cuban top legislator added that if the Supreme Court takes the case, it should have a verdict ready before the end of the current year, "although we should not forget that there is a period of summer break." An unprecedented number of amicus curiae - friend of the court - briefs have been filed with the Supreme Court by national and international personalities, jurists and human rights organizations requesting review of lower court rulings. Alarcon reiterated his admiration for the resistance of the Cuban Five and particularly of Gerardo Hernandez, who is serving two life terms plus 15 years. He revealed that in recent days, the authorities of the maximum security prison where Hernandez is being held, punished all the inmates, including the Cuban anti-terrorist fighter. The president of the Cuban National Assembly (Parliament) was speaking on Monday to personalities and ambassadors from Arab nations and Russia, invited to the 14th International Festival of Poetry that began yesterday in Havana. |
Presenta Gobierno EEUU oposición a que Corte Suprema tome caso de Los Cinco por Alina Martínez La Habana, 25 may (AIN) Ricardo Alarcón, presidente del Parlamento cubano, dijo hoy que el Gobierno de EE.UU. presentó este fin de semana su respuesta oponiéndose a que la Corte Suprema tome el caso de Los Cinco cubanos antiterroristas prisioneros en ese país. Precisó que ahora los abogados de la defensa tienen 10 días para su réplica hasta inicios de junio, y seguirá como parte del procedimiento que se reúnan los jueces de la Corte Suprema estadounidense, para decidir si aceptan o no el caso. Explicó que, de ser afirmativa la decisión esa máxima instancia judicial deberá dar un veredicto, siempre dentro del año que transcurre, aunque precisó, se debe tener en cuenta que recesa en el período de verano. Alarcón reiteró su admiración por la capacidad de resistencia de Los Cinco cubanos presos injustamente en Estados Unidos, en especial de Gerardo Hernández, condenado a dos cadenas perpetuas más 15 años. Anunció que por estos días la prisión de máxima seguridad donde se encuentra Hernández impuso castigo a todos los reos, incluido el antiterrorista cubano, lo cual ha sucedido en varias ocasiones durante estos más de 10 años en que permanece en cautiverio. El Presidente de la Asamblea Nacional del Poder Popular habló ante personalidades de la cultura y embajadores de naciones árabes y Rusia, invitados al XIV Festival de Poesía promovido por la Unión de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba (UNEAC), entre ellos, el poeta mozambicano y gran amigo de Cuba, Marcelino dos Santos. Alarcón compareció en el espacio mensual de la UNEAC en homenaje a los 50 años de Revolución, en el que evocó la significación del triunfo de Enero en su vida; recordó la lucha estudiantil, el magisterio de Raúl Roa y su permanencia en Nueva York como diplomático. Mi obra en aquellos tiempos fue la polémica, la oratoria y la defensa de los principios de la Revolución Cubana, expresó tras revelar que siempre quiso escribir y lo ha hecho, pero que aún no se consideraba un escritor. Rindió homenaje al combatiente Gerardo Abreu (Fontán), de quien mucho aprendió sobre historia, cultura, revolución, y hubiera sido un relevante artista que vio tronchada su vocación al ser asesinado por la dictadura de Fulgencio Batista en 1958.
